NSW: Revellers race to vantage sites around Sydney Harbour
Thousands of revellers are racing to Sydney Harbour to secure the best vantage sites
for the New Year's Eve fireworks spectacular.
Sydney Water police say boats began arriving into the waterway early yesterday.
And National Parks and Wildlife Service rangers were witnessing people arriving at
harbour foreshore areas last night.
Some pitched tents for shelter during the long wait until midnight tonight.
More than 600 people have gathered at Bradleys Head on Sydney's lower north which is
considered one of the best vantage sites for the spectacular.
A reveller at the scene says people began arriving at the Sydney Harbour National Park
headland in Mosman at dawn.
The parks service is allowing 10,000 people at the site with the majority expected
to arrive when the weather fines up.
People have also begun arriving at Nielsen Park in Sydney's east while large numbers
of boats had anchored at Athol Bay and Farm Cove by 8am.
An parks spokesman says despite the drizzly weather, a total fireban has been declared
which will remain in place overnight.
An estimated 1.2 million people are expected to visit Sydney to welcome in 2000.
