NSW: Government misguided on Port Botany stevedoring - union

The Maritime Union says the New South Wales government's decision to introduce a third
stevedoring company .. at one of Australia's biggest ports .. is misguided.

Ports Minister JOE TRIPODI has said Australia's two major stevedores .. P-and-O Ports
and Patrick .. won't be allowed to bid for operating rights for a new terminal at Port
Botany.

He says increasing competition will benefit consumers .. but Maritime Union of Australia
branch secretary WARREN SMITH says too many companies competing for cargo could actually
increase costs.
